The First Law

I finished Joe Abercrombie's First Law series of books recently.

Pretty solid fantasy series, well outside the norm.  Dark and often funny.

I felt the books grew progressively stronger, the first book tended to meander and some of the characters didn't seem terribly appealing at first. The second one starting moving things along, and it just got better from there.

There are a few standout characters, Logan a man from the north who occasionally turns into the Bloody Nine and mindlessly chops up friend or foe, and Glokta, and ex-Mr. perfect who had is body destroyed, now he's a cripple who doesn't mind torturing on command.

The ending was amusing and unique, giving the novel something of a circular feeling.  I liked the ending, but if you enjoy traditional endings you may not care for it.

Abercrombie's seems to have no problem pumping books out a quick pace, and yet the quality does not seem to suffer.  Perhaps he will be nice and reliable like Hobb.

9/10
